Summer Program: BCS in Sarajevo
The Sarajevo summer study-abroad program is a special 3-week, 2-credit intensive course designed to extend and solidify language skills developed in CLI intensive BCS classes. The programs share a single curriculum, use the same materials, and in many cases the same instructors at ASU and abroad. Basically, class ends on Friday in Arizona and picks up where it left off in Sarajevo on Monday.
The Sarajevo program offers three levels of instruction:
- Elementary BCS in Sarajevo (Syllabus)
- Intermediate BCS in Sarajevo (Syllabus)
- Advanced BCS in Sarajevo (Syllabus)
Students in all three courses share a common set of activities and excursions. See the Sarajevo co-curricular activities schedule.
Serving as Bosnia's administrative, economic, cultural, and educational center, Sarajevo consists of four municipalities: Old City, Center, New City, and New Sarajevo. The city boasts a number of museums, galleries, cultural centers, historic buildings, a national theater and opera, and old markets. There are notable architectural influences from the time Bosnia-Herzegovina was part of the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the former Yugoslavia.
Classes meet weekdays for three hours a day. Cultural activities take place every afternoon. For a complete list of activities, see the Sarajevo co-curricular activities schedule.
Materials for the elementary and intermediate classes are the same as those for the intensive Elementary BCS at ASU (BCS 194) and intensive Intermediate BCS at ASU (BCS 294). Materials for the advanced class are listed in the syllabus.
- Elementary BCS (SLC 494, 2 credits):
Successful completion of CLI Intensive Elementary BCS, or 2 semesters of 100-level BCS instruction, or equivalent knowledge OR Sarajevo entrance testing results in the "A" range
- Intermediate BCS (SLC 494, 2 credits):
Successful completion of CLI Intensive Intermediate BCS, or 2 semesters of 200-level BCS instruction, or equivalent knowledge, OR Sarajevo entrance testing results in the "B" range
- Advanced BCS (SLC 494, 2 credits):
Successful completion of ASU 394 (BCS Composition and Conversation; not taught in CLI), or 2 semesters of 300-level BCS instruction, or equivalent knowledge, OR Sarajevo entrance testing results in the "C" range
Note: ASU reserves the right to assign students to a level of instruction based on their entrance exam results, regardless of their past history of BCS study.
Students live in a private house in downtown Sarajevo, with internet, satellite TV, etc. Meals are available in nearby cafes and restaurants. The cost of meals is not included in the estimated cost of the program.
