About the Location:

Founded in 700 BC, Samarqand is roughly same age as Babylon or Rome. In its 2700-year history, the city has repeatedly been conquered, destroyed, and rebuilt, most notably during the conquests of Alexander the Great, the Arabs, Geghis-Khan, and Tamerlane. Situated at the intersection of trade routes running between Persia, China, and India, Samarqand was one of the largest and most prosperous cities on the Great Silk Road. The city has long been renowned for its beauty and for the achievements of its scholars and poets.

Modern Samarqand is a mix of modern architecture and historical monuments spanning several centuries. The city is known for its central square, the Registan, one of the trademarks of modern Uzbekistan.

The CLI program is housed a block from the Registan, near the wide, tree-lined boulevards of the former Russian quarter, and an easy walk to the Siyob bazaar and several of the city's best-known attractions.

A video tour of the city's best-known historic monuments is available here.
