8-Week Summer Program: Russian or Tatar in Kazan
The Kazan 8-week summer study-abroad program is an 8-credit intensive course forth those who desire a full immersion experience in Russian or Tatar.
The Kazan program offers the following levels of instruction:
- Intermediate Russian in Kazan (2011 Syllabus)
- Third-Year Russian in Kazan (2011 Syllabus)
- Fourth-Year Russian in Kazan (2011 Syllabus
- Elementary Tatar in Kazan (2011 Syllabus)
- Intermediate Tatar in Kazan ( 2011 Syllabus)
Students in both courses share a common set of activities and excursions. See the Kazan 2011 co-curricular activities schedule.
- Elementary Russian (SLC 494, 2 credits):
Successful completion of CLI Intensive Elementary Russian (For Intermediate Russian applicants) - Intermediate Russian (SLC 494, 2 credits):
Successful completion of CLI Intensive Intermediate Russia (For all other applicants) - All participants who wish to study Tatar are strongly encouraged to gain basic competency in Russian before going to Kazan.
Classes meet 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Cultural activities take place most afternoons. For a complete list of activities, see the 2010 Kazan co-curricular activities schedule.
Students may choose from one of the following three options:
1. Home stay with Russian- or Tatar-speaking host family
2. A shared apartment with a Russian- or Tatar-speaking host peer
3. A dormitory on the Kazan Federal University campus (located adjacent to language center)

Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, recently celebrated its 1000th year. With a population of more than 1.1 million, the city is a major center of science and culture.
Tatar and Russian are both official languages of the Republic of Tatarstan and both can be heard on the streets of Kazan.
About CLI's 8-Week Courses in Kazan
This course is conducted off the ASU campus, in Kazan, Russia. It includes:
- 8 weeks for 8 ASU credits (equals 2 semesters of regular classes)
- Students arrange their own travel (Exception: ROTC students on Project GO scholarships; their travel is arranged by Project GO).
- Fellowships and Scholarships available. (See http://cli.asu.edu/fellowships.)
This course is open to any applicant over 18, including undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students. Non-ASU students and non-students are welcome. Federal employees and active duty military personnel may participate in Arizona-based courses, but are not eligible for CLI study-abroad programs.
Enrollment is limited and competitive.
COST DETAILS
The 2012 Kazan 8-week study-abroad fee is estimated at $3,400 (subject to change). This fee covers:
- instruction
- housing
- breakfast and dinner
- excursions (including entry and guide fees)
- insurance
It does not include:
- airfare / travel expenses
- lunch
- personal expenses
- visa
