Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, recently celebrated its 1000th year. With a population of more than 1.1 million, the city is a major center of science and culture.
The Tatar State University of Humanities and Education was founded in 1876. At that time it was the third-largest teachers institute in Russia, after St. Petersburg and Moscow. It took its present form in 2005, with the merger of the Kazan State Pedagogical University, the Kazan State University for the Humanities, and the Tatar-American Regional Institute. TSUHE is currently merging with three other universities to form Volga Federal University. Details will be posted here as they become available.
Tatar and Russian are both official languages of the Republic of Tatarstan and both can be heard on the streets of Kazan.
Classes meet weekdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Cultural activities take place every afternoon. For a complete list of activities, see the Kazan co-curricular activities schedule (pending).
