Intensive Summer Farsi & Tajik in Dushanbe

About the Program:

CLI's 4-week summer program in Dushanbe helps students extend and solidify the language and culture skills they develop during intensive Farsi or Tajik classes on the ASU campus.

The Dushanbe program offers instruction in: Elementary Persian (Tajik and Farsi), Intermediate Farsi, Third-Year Farsi, Intermediate Tajik, and Third-Year Tajik.

Students in all levels share a common set of activities and excursions.

Students receive 3 ASU credits at the 400 level (SLC 494) for successfully completing the program.

Since Tajik is the variant of Persian used in Dushanbe, all students are required to have a reading knowledge of the language. Students of Farsi with no background in Tajik must attend 10 hours of training in Tajik before departing for Dushanbe. This training will familiarize them with the Tajik alphabet and the most important differences between the two variants.

About the Location:

Dushanbe is the capital and largest city in the mountainous Republic of Tajikistan. The city is trilingual, with the Tajik dialect of Persian, Uzbek, and Russian being the most common languages. With a population of almost 700,000, Dushanbe is the economic, administrative, and educational hub of the country. The city is home to the Tajik Academy of Sciences and seven universities, including the Tajik State National University. Dushanbe is a popular starting point for trekkers traveling to the Pamir mountains, which form the western extreme of the "Rooftop of the World."
