ACADEMIC MATTERS: CREDIT, AUDITS, PLACEMENT, WORKLOAD

Can I transfer ASU credits to my home school?..........PROBABLY
CLI awards regular ASU language credits for all its courses, including overseas courses. Most schools accept these, provided students are eligible to transfer credits (e.g., provided they have not already exceeded their transfer credit maximum.) Check with your school's transfer office or registrar first if you have concerns.

Be aware that ASU charges a fee ($15 as of this writing) to issue a transcript. Your home university may charge transfer-of-credit fees. Check with your school in advance.

Can I use my ASU credits toward my major at my home school?..........MAYBE
It depends on your major and your school and department's policy on transfer credits. Check with your school. CLI courses award regular ASU credit. The course number and title for each course is listed on the course page on this site. You may need this information when you talk to your transfer credit coordinator.
Can I audit a CLI class?..........NO
CLI classes must be taken for a grade. This includes CLI classes overseas.
Can I take a CLI class pass/fail?..........NO
CLI classes must be taken for a grade. This includes CLI classes overseas.
What is the add/drop deadline?..........DAY 1
Unfortunately, a side effect of the accelerated schedule of CLI courses is that the add/drop deadline for most CLI courses is day one of the class. CLI will make every effort to place students appropriately. If you, nonetheless, wish to request a different level, you must do that on day one.
How many hours a day do classes meet?..........5 HOURS
Classes in the U.S. meet 5 hours a day, 2.5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.
How much homework is there?........4 HOURS
Successful students report an average load of 3-4 hours of homework a day.
I have a part-time job. Can CLI make accommodations?........NO
CLI is very intensive. Between class time and homework, most students spend an average of 6-9 hours a day at CLI, plus 3-4 hours of homework. At this pace, it is extremely difficult for students to catch up after missing class time. Most students working part-time jobs during CLI find it difficult to achieve the results they want.

STUDY ABROAD

If I travel abroad with CLI, who buys my ticket?........YOU DO
With the exception of ROTC cadets traveling abroad with Project GO, CLI participants plan and purchase their own tickets.
Participants are not required to fly on any particular itinenary, although they may not leave Phoenix before the end of the CLI program in Arizona and must arrive at their host country before the start of classes there.
CLI will post suggested itineraries for each study-abroad location in Spring 2012.
If I make my own international travel arrangements, who meets me at the airport in my host country?........YOUR RESIDENT DIRECTOR
CLI will collect travel information from all participants before departure and will meet them individually at the airport.
I hear CLI organizes group travel to some locations. Is it true?..........YES
CLI organizes group travel for ROTC students in the Kazan (4-week), Dushanbe, and Samarkand programs. CLI participants are welcome (but not required) to join these groups.
Participants in these groups are allowed one carry-on bag only; no checked luggage. There are no exceptions to this policy. Students who wish to check luggage should make arrangements to travel on their own.

ROOM, BOARD

What kitchen facilities are available in the dorms?
The dorm has a kitchen with full-sized fridge and with ovens. This kitchen is shared by all residents of the dorm, however. Participants should not count on having regular access to the stove. Participants may rent minifridges and microwave ovens. Details on this will be included in acceptance packages. Participants should plan to eat in dining halls, off campus, or to prepare meals using rented minifridges and microwaves..

MISCELLANEOUS

What is MMR? Why do I need it?
MMR is the measels vaccination. Before a student can register, they are required to document that they've had two measles vaccinations (one of which must be dated after 1979), or a lab test showing proof of immunity to the measles (rubeola).
The ASU computer system will not allow you to register until ASU has verification that you have your MMR vaccination. CLI cannot waive this requirement. For details, see ASU Student Immunization Requirements.
