Intensive Tatar in Kazan

The Critical Languages Institute offers an 8-week intensive language program in Kazan for students of Intermediate Tatar. The program awards 8 ASU credits at the 200 level. Students live with host families, participate in an extensive program of cultural events and excursions, as well as participating in summer internships and daily intensive language courses.

This intensive course provides intermediate instruction in Tatar language and culture.

The goal of this course is to help students expand their mastery of Tatar vocabulary, grammar and orthography, as well as to develop more advanced listening, reading, conversational, and compositional skills.

The course incorporates a wide variety of activities, combining textbook material with authentic texts and videos; with frequent team exercises to help students achieve a working, practical knowledge of the language and culture.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • understand factual written and spoken content on familiar topics
  • be able to participate in routine social interactions
  • be able to accomplish daily tasks with ease
  • have a solid command of the core grammatical constructions of Tatar
  • be conversant with all the grammatical structures of the language
  • be prepared for advanced study

A working knowledge of Russian, while not required, will be vary helpful to students of Tatar in Kazan.

About the Instructor: 

Guzel Nabiullina teaches in the Tatar Philology and History Department of Kazan State University. She has taught Tatar in CLI since 2008.

About CLI's 8-Week Courses in Kazan

This course is conducted off the ASU campus, in Kazan, Russia. It includes:

  • 8 weeks for 8 ASU credits (equals 2 semesters of regular classes)
  • Students arrange their own travel (Exception: ROTC students on Project GO scholarships; their travel is arranged by Project GO).
  • Fellowships and Scholarships available. (See http://cli.asu.edu/fellowships.)

This course is open to any applicant over 18, including undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students. Non-ASU students and non-students are welcome. Federal employees and active duty military personnel may participate in Arizona-based courses, but are not eligible for CLI study-abroad programs.

Enrollment is limited and competitive.

COST DETAILS
The 2012 Kazan 8-week study-abroad fee is estimated at $3,400 (subject to change). This fee covers:

  • instruction
  • housing
  • breakfast and dinner
  • excursions (including entry and guide fees)
  • insurance

It does not include:

  • airfare / travel expenses
  • lunch
  • personal expenses
  • visa
