Russian & Tatar at Kazan State University
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation. It is 800 km southeast of Moscow, located on the banks of the Volga and Kama Rivers. The population is approximately 1.1 million – half Russian and half Tatar.
Kazan State University, founded in 1804, is one of the largest and oldest institutions of higher education in Russia. It is on the list of the most valuable objects of the cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. It is, famously, the university which expelled Lenin from its Law School in 1887.
Semesters run September 1 - December 15 and January 15 - May 30.
Participants may attend either semester alone or enroll for a year-long, two-semester program.
Each semester, participants take eight credits of Tatar, four hours of intermediate or advanced Russian and three hours of Tatar history, Tatar culture, art, etc. Participants are registered as ASU students and qualify for up to 14 hours per semester of ASU residence credit.
The program is open to upper division and graduate students with a GPA of at least 3.0 who have completed two semesters of Tatar and Russian. Candidates not at this level should consider attending the ASU Critical Languages Institute the summer before participating in this program.
Program costs include tuition, fees, and supplemental instructional costs of approximately $3,300 per semester. Additional expenses include passport and visa fees, insurance, personal expenses, and room and board, estimated at $3,200 per semester, and airfare, estimated at $3,000 (open-ended return ticket). (Actual figures may be higher or lower depending on program enrollment and exchange rates.)
Most ASU scholarships, grants, and loans can be applied to this program. Students should consult with financial aid counselors. The Center for Global Educational Services provides scholarships available on a competitive basis. Students are encouraged to apply for fellowships supporting study and research in the region.
